River Lofts Development

The River Lofts Development

It is all about the river, the lake and the architecture.  The River Lofts development in downtown Manitowoc offers a residential style of living unique to our community.  Scott Kindness, architect owner of Workshop Architects in Milwaukee and managing partner of The River Lofts, LLC has brought Milwaukee’s Third Ward metropolitan flare to Manitowoc.

The River Lofts are a blend of the new and old, modern and historic, contemporary and classic.  General Merchant Osuld Torrison built the historic building in stages between 1880 and 1890.  Originally known as the Dempsey building in 1910, this historic building housed many different businesses in the downtown commercial district of Manitowoc such as the Henderson Hoyt Company, Boston Store and Johnson Hills.  Most recently, North End Drug leased space on the main floor.  The historic Nineteenth Century architecture of the building and contemporary design of the lofts make for a unique marriage of the past and present.

The residential levels of the building encompass the second and third level of the three story building.  The street level will house a restaurant, lounge and other commercial space.  The river level, which is one story below street level, will offer additional restaurant space and a community room for the residents.  With condos averaging 1,700 square feet of living space, with the largest unit offering 3,000 square feet, The River Lofts offer fifteen luxury condominiums on the Manitowoc River just a few yards from where the river meets Lake Michigan.  Each unit boasts top-of-the-line finishes and amenities including eighteen foot ceilings, exposed brick and beams, cherry cabinets, polished concrete floors with radiant heat, granite counter tops, spa bathrooms with walk-in rain showers and whirlpool tubs featuring Kohler fixtures.

What goes on inside the building is only half of the story.  What makes this development so unique is what surrounds the building.  With the Manitowoc River, Eighth Street Bridge and Manitowoc Courthouse dome to the south, the Wisconsin Maritime Museum, Lake Michigan and spectacular lake sunrises to the east, the vistas from the condominiums are spectacular.  To enjoy these views even more, enclosed sunrooms and balconies are part of the building design with the third-floor units featuring generous rooftop terraces.

The River Lofts residences, along with the restaurant, lounge and commercial space, will be a spectacular addition to downtown Manitowoc which currently is experiencing revitalization.  Hopefully the rebirth of this landmark on one of the cities most visited intersections will be the impetus for the continued revitalization of historic Eighth Street and the entire City of Manitowoc nestled on the beautiful shores of Lake Michigan.
