A Brief Manitowoc History

What is now known as Manitowoc was originally inhabited by Native Americans. Later, the French arrived and settled the area. In the seventeenth century, following the outcome of the Seven Years War, it came under the sovereignty of Great Britain. In 1789, it was incorporated into the Northwest Territory and in 1809 it was switched to the Illinois Territory and then changed again in 1818 to the Michigan Territory. Finally in April 20, 1836, it became part of the Wisconsin Territory.

Originally, Manitowoc County was part of Brown County until 1838 when an act of Territorial Legislature created a separate County Government for Manitowoc County. The first election was held on March 1, 1839. Vote canvassing and issue certificates of election were undertaken by the Commissioners of Brown County.
